Cover Reveal: Perfekt Control by S.T. Bende

PERFEKT CONTROL
THE ÆRE SAGA: BOOK TWO
Genre: Upper YA Paranormal/Fantasy (Norse Mythology)

Perfekt Control is an Upper YA Paranormal/Fantasy Norse Mythology that will be released on February 9, 2016. It is the sequel to Perfekt Order: The ÆRE Saga Book One.

Book Blurb for Perfekt Control

Rule the realms.

Brynn Aksel is a valkyrie—a battle goddess tasked with protecting both the God of War and the future of Asgard. She fends off giants and dark elves with an iron fist, a glossy smile, and no less than perfekt control. She’s focused one-hundred-percent on rising through the valkyrie ranks, and not at all on her lifelong crush on Henrik Andersson—the one guy in all the realms who could be her undoing.

Henrik serves as War’s other bodyguard, and he’s too focused on protecting their shared charge to realize that Brynn’s a girl. When an unprecedented surge of darkness abducts the Goddess of Love, Brynn’s already-steely focus is singularly directed on her new assignment—accompany Henrik to recover the realms’ source of light before the cosmos descends into chaos.

While battling demons, dragons, and the not-quite-dead, it becomes clear that immortality does not equal invincibility. And when Hel herself puts a hit on Brynn, the valkyrie has to decide if staying in control is worth losing everything . . . or if it’s time to rule the realms.

Christmas Book Blog-a-thon

Okaay. So I don't know if someone has already made this blog version of Booktube-a-thon but, doesn't matter. I am gonna be doing it! ^_^ I made my own goals and challenges so... it's up to you if you're gonna do it too!

Sleigh bells ring, Are you listening? Hahaha.

1st Challenge: Read a recently gifted book

I have actually read this book already buuut . . . . this was a book recently given to me just because I adore the cover so muuch! It is To All the Boys I've Loved Before by the a-mazin' Jenny Han. If you want to see my review about it, I'll link it here.

I will be re-reading this because I loved it to pieces! And I read it for only hours or about a day at least. :)

2nd Challenge: Christmas-syy cover

Honestly, I don't know what this book is about except that it has a cat on its cover. That's what bought me. The cover looks somehow Christmas-syy to me because it is associated with the colors green and red. I don't know. I really think that this cover gives that Christmas vibes sooo... yeah. I'll be reading this after the 1st challenge. Which I am currently accomplishing.

3rd Challenge: Christmas Setting

This challenge requires a book that is set on Christmas or the days before it. For this challenge I picked up Dash and Lily's Book of Dares by Rachel Cohn and David Levithan. I think, this is a part of like a series or trilogy by these two amazing authors. But, I'm not sure on that one. It just sounds like it.

(I like this edition better xx)

4th Challenge: Christmas Romance

I think y'all know what I'll be reading for this final challenge. It is My True Love Gave To Me by various authors and edited by the lovely Stephanie Perkins. It is a collection of twelve short stories about love and romance. And I'm quite excited to read this.

That is it! I am really excited to be reading all these amazing books aaand, let me know if you have read them or not in the comments below. Or you can tweet or instagram me by clicking my social links on the upper right corner of my blog. Thanks guys. x

Book Review: To All the Boys I've Loved Before by Jenny Han

Add to Goodreads | Purchase on Amazon
Published by: Simon and Schuster on April 15th 2014
Genres:  Young Adult, Contemporary-Romance
Pages:  288
Format: eBook

Book Blurb:

Lara Jean finds comfort in writing letters. She wrote one for each boy that she liked, telling them her feelings, sealed the letters, wrote their addresses and stamped them. Then she keeps it on a box under her bed. But one day, Lara Jean found out that her letters had been sent. Embarrassment starts creeping up as she realized what happened, especially because one of the letter receivers is her sister's boyfriend, Josh and the oh-so-popular Peter Kavinsky. Later on, she realized that having those letters sent was not a bad idea after all.

I didn't expect myself to love this book so much and hate it at the same time!

I am not really used with reading a book for a day, so I was kinda surprised that I did it with this one. I just can't put it down! I am really proud that I read this. I never intended on doing so, because the book is pretty mainstream. And it's not that I have problems with popular books, but sometimes I just lose all the excitement when I hear everyone talking about it. I was actually waiting for it to lose its spotlight on the whole social network. Unfortunate for me, it never did. So what pushed me to read this book?

It was being optioned for a movie! And I hate not having to read a book before it comes out as a movie.

There are times when I almost throw it away because I hate Lara Jean's ideas. And she was quite immature. But of course I don't do that, it's harassment. There are also times that I go crazy, constantly squealing and smiling. Either way, the book is still driving me nuts. It was so amazing yet so intriguing. You don't know whose with who. Or who likes who. Even until the end, which, is such a cliffhanger! That was actually the only reason why I hated it. There are tons of Book Freaks like I am who told me that the ending is soooooo intriguing yet I pushed through with this book. I thought they were just overreacting. But it was actually true! Oh if only I could read the book without that particular ending. I just ...ughhh. I can't even explain how I feel about it. Lucky for me, or us who read it, there will be a second book! Or so I thought.

The characters are actually soooo relatable. Even Peter! Mainly because they are teens like us, and oh did I mention? I am also writing letters with the same purpose. Lara Jean and I are twins! Except, I don't put addresses. I realized it isn't safe, especially after what happened to Lara Jean. I also loved Peter's character. Such a badass but has a sweet side.  A very sweet one. I can actually compare him to the love of my life, Killian "Hook" Jones. From'Once Upon A Time'. Do you know that TV Series? Oh goodness. He's soo mean but has a soft side when it comes to Emma. *I'm squealing while typing this right now*. I"ll stop talking now because some of you might not understand.

Moving on, I can say that Jenny Han"s writing style was very effective. Especially in this book, maybe because I tried reading "The Summer I Turned Pretty" but didn't enjoy the first few parts so I stopped. And it didn't happen in this book. And Han made me frustrated, intrigued and mad the whole time! I wonder how she pulled this book together. (Didn't make any research so I didn't know how).

Additional stuff here .....

Jenny Han went to the Philippines last June 20th. You, yes I am talking to those who went to the signing, are very lucky because you saw her. *cries*

Cover Reveal : Angel Eyes by Mary Beth Lee

"As a teenager Sharlene chose to be a survivor. As a Guardian, she helps others make that choice."

I have recently posted a review about Dead Girl Walking by Mary Beth Lee. It is the first book in the Guardian trilogy. It was so so so great you can check this link if you haven't yet: Dead Girl Walking by Mary Beth Lee (Book Review + Interview)

The second book in the trilogy is up as well, being 'An Angel Earns Her Wings'.

'The Guardian Trilogy' is basically about Sharlene Gallagher, a superstar gone missing. Rumors says she was murdered. And Addison proved it. Addison is a girl that can see ghosts. Before she only had to tell them to go to the light, but Sharlene's a bit different. She is an angel on a test.

I haven't read the second book but I would love too! But without further ado, here it is. The cover of the third book, "Angel Eyes."

Angel Eyes
by Mary Beth Lee

Expected Publication:
July 20

Genres:  Young Adult, Paranormal, Mystery
Pages:  217

Le book blurb:

New Case, New Charge, New Choices.
Sharlene Gallagher's new charge, Dagan Miller, knows about the sinister side of the world. Dagan’s little sister is missing. Sharlene doesn’t know if the disappearance is why she’s been assigned to protect Dagan. She does know she’ll be able to help Dagan one way or another.
The last thing Sharlene expects to discover is another Guardian at her new school. Another Guardian who seems sketchy even though he’s totally gorgeous.
But Sharlene knows all about gorgeous guys. Add Guardian to the mix, and she figures there’s a world of danger she never knew existed. A world that could get her killed. And while she might be dead already, dying as an angel would mean no more helping others and going to the light, so that’s out of the question.
What’s not out of the question? Finding out who kidnapped Dagan Miller’s little sister and why Dagan’s life is at risk. What Sharlene doesn’t know is the second Guardian is only one of the dangers to her in town. Figuring out the others will be key to not only saving Dagan’s life but hers as well.

Angel Eyes, A Sharlene Gallagher mystery, The Guardian Book 3 by Mary Beth Lee.

What I think about it ...

Really? Really? Okay, I never read the second book so I am not particularly sure if Addison's character is still in here. But duh, I needed her. I hope she was actually in the 2nd and 3rd book. But basing on the blurb, that's sorta impossible. One, because Sharlene's the main character and two, I think this is a completely different story. The only similarity is that Sharlene's still a ghost and she's still on a test I bet. I am really excited to be reading the second book and marathon-ing up to this last book! Mark your calendars! This book is a must-buy!

Guest Post: When Life Gives You Lemons, Make Lemonade…and Turn to Books By Marilyn Peake

When Life Gives You Lemons, Make Lemonade…and Turn to Books
By Marilyn Peake

If you’re a news junkie like me, life can get seriously depressing.  Never mind can get, it just is.  With all the violence among individual people and entire nations, all the hate speech online and on cable TV, all the corrupt politicians, all the poverty and suffering in the world, all the prejudice, all the economic crashes, it can seem pretty dim out there.  Add in the bazillion news reports on impending disaster and possible apocalyptic futures, and it is dark.  I mean really dark, as in a meteor has struck Earth and sunlight is a thing of the past.

If you’re a writer or reader, you have a way out of the darkness.  As a writer, you can use your pen (or more aptly, your computer keyboard) to paint a world that leads you into a place of light.  As a reader, you can step into that world and follow the path that leads to a better place.

Think of lemons.  Bright yellow lemons.  And sweet, delicious lemonade.  I’m thirsty already.

As a writer, I’ve set the main characters of my novels and short stories in difficult circumstances and helped them find their way out.  Or not.  Sometimes there is no way out, but the story points to ways in which the real world could make things better.  Many of the particular circumstances are similar to stories in the news.

I wrote the short story, OCCUPY FAERIE, when members of the Occupy movement were being tear-gassed by police.  In this short story, an evil faerie has an affair with a corrupt politician and uses him to undermine the Occupy movement.

I wrote the short story, COYOTE CROSSING, after hearing harrowing tales of illegal Mexican immigrants being mistreated and turned into slaves by cruel employers in the United States.  In COYOTE CROSSING, I dealt with the horror of this type of treatment by turning a realistic story into Dark Fantasy and added a twist of Dark Fantasy at the end.  In this case, there was no light at the end of the tunnel, just an attempt to shine light on a painful subject.

My most recent publication, SHADE, a Young Adult Mystery novel with Paranormal elements, introduces a teenaged girl named Shade.  Her real name is Galactic Shade Griffin, but she hates the quirkiness of it, so she simply goes by Shade.  Life has dealt her a bad hand of cards.  Her mother is addicted to drugs and alcohol and is constantly breaking up with boyfriends and moving with Shade to a new town.  Shade is forced to start at a new school over and over again, and her strange name is catnip for bullies.  In order to control the chaos in her life, Shade cuts.

In her junior year of high school, Shade is once again starting at a new school.  This time, however, she has a ghost boy in her attic bedroom who serves as a mentor.  She also has a new best friend, Annie.  When Annie goes missing, Shade discovers just how much inner strength she has.  She ends up facing a situation similar to one of the most horrifying stories frequently on TV news.

I have a deep respect for Shade.  Struggling with circumstances similar to some of the most heartrending, bitter stories on the news, she’s capable of creating a bit of lemonade.

Shade is a girl on a hero’s journey, going from smart-ass to badass.  If you handed her lemons, she’d squeeze them into a pitcher, add water and sugar…and then plant the seeds in the ground and grow a lemon tree!

Marilyn Peake is the author of both novels and short stories. Her publications have received excellent reviews. Marilyn’s one of the contributing authors in BOOK: THE SEQUEL, published by The Perseus Books Group, with one of her entries included in serialization at THE DAILY BEAST. In addition, Marilyn has served as Editor of a number of anthologies. Her short stories have been published in seven anthologies and on the literary blog, GLASS CASES.

Awards: Silver Award, two Honorable Mentions and eight Finalist placements in the ForeWord Magazine Book of the Year Awards, two Winner and two Finalist placements in the EPPIE Awards, Winner of the Dream Realm Awards, and eight Top Ten Finisher Awards in the Preditors and Editors Readers Poll.

Bookie Tour - The Polaris Uprising (Review + EXCERPT!)

The Polaris Uprising

Published by: Tiwala Books October 30, 2013
Genres:  Young Adult, Sci-Fi, Dystopia
Pages:  328
Source: Pinoy Book Tours
My Rating: 4/5

In less than seven years, eighteen-year-old Ryla Jensen will succeed her father as the president of Neress, a nation where all citizens are cared for from the moment they’re born. Fed, sheltered, even educated—every need of theirs is met.

The only price they pay is their free will.

Groomed since childhood to take on a role she’s not even sure she wants, Ryla’s only escape from the pressures of duty is her sister, Alanna. But when her eyes are opened to the oppressive regime her father built, she begins to question everything she’s set to inherit—and finds herself at odds with her sister’s blind allegiance to their father.

Torn between loyalty to her family and the fight for freedom, Ryla must decide just how far she’s willing to go to make a stand and risk losing the person she loves most in the world: Alanna.

The Polaris Uprising is basically about this government wherein your life, or simply everything depends on the government. You can't pick a job of your own, you can't marry the person you love unless you genetically matched, and you can't complain. No freedom at all if you sum it up. This book is definitely Divergent-alike. Based from the movie, at least. They never really get to pick, it is based on this test that you take. (Sorry Divergent fans! Don't know what it's called!)

But Ryla sees through the glamour (Hi Shadowhunters). What I mean is, she can see the anomalies, the problems etc. her eyes are wide open to these things. Why, you might be asking. Simple. She's the president's daughter. And what's worse is, she's bound to be the next president. She will be taking over her father's position. More of her theories were proven by Tyson. The son of her tutor that is involved with the Polaris Movement who strongly disagrees with the government. She joined their group only to find out that everything that has been happening lately was sabotage. And it was his father who planned to do it in order to blame it all on the Polaris Movement.

Well enough of that, I might spoil you if I continue.

If you guys can't tell from the books that I reviewed, never in my life have I read any book related to Politics or Government. It was just difficult to uncerstand. I thought it would be hard for me to read this book 'til ts end. But I was proven wrong. Jen made the whole complicated-thing-about-the-government simple. Well, I still get confused with the terms or position in the government but that doesn't really matter. It was the story itself that got me. And the characters as well.

The characters possess different personalities that I loved, hated and was simply annoyed with. I especially love Tyson. I don't know why, but he seems too good, too handsome of a guy. I love his cheeky and straight forward personality. He's soo charming! I also like Ryla's role. She was like the climax of every chapter. I always watch out for her actions, what she will do next and what more will she discover. And lastly, I was quite annoyed with Owen. He can be a very sweet guy at times, but he can also be dumb. Sorry! I just hate it when he always tries to disagree with Ryla just because he cares too much for Alanna. I mean, C'mon! Ryla has her own life! It is Alanna who always tries to get involved with her life.

Moving on, the story itself was very nice. Though it was a bit cliche. Bad things happen in the country, they blame a rebellious group for it, but they don't know it was the President's doings. It was always like that. Government officials become the bad guys. Hahaha. But we can't help it can we? It comes with their image. The thing that I liked most about this, is that the President didn't try to hide anything from Ryla. In fact, he was encouraging her to do the same when the time comes. Which of course, Ryla strongly disagrees with.

I enjoyed this novel from beginning to end, especially the romance and the Ryla-Alanna part. Both of these were sweet and just nice. And I loved it.

“So what happens now?”

“I can’t let him take the fall for this,” Ryla said, looking up at her. “I have to get him out, and I need your help.”

Gates’s eyes widened, blinked back at her.

“That detention center has the highest level of security—even under ordinary circumstances. And now it’s guarding the country’s most notorious prisoner… Ryla, what you’re planning is sheer insanity.”

“So you won’t help me?”

Gates was quiet for a long time. She issued no denial but offered no confirmation, either. Finally, she turned back to Ryla.

“You want my help? Here’s how I’ll help: I’m going to give you some advice, and if I were you, I’d listen very carefully. Go back. Go back to your comfortable life, where you’re safe and you’re oblivious and you can pretend you never got involved with us. Too many things have already been set into motion, and this is bigger than any rescue mission you could possibly stage.”

“You mean there’s a war coming. A genuine uprising.”

Gates didn’t look at her this time. But Ryla knew the answer was yes. It had all led to this moment, even if no one had said it out loud until now.

“You’re asking me to sacrifice him, then. He’ll be a casualty while Polaris gears up for the real battle—is that it?”

“There will always be casualties, Ryla. Remember that.”

“Maybe so. But if I have it in my power to save someone from becoming collateral damage, I’m not going to pass up the chance.”

“So you’re going through with this? Whether I help you or not?”

Up ahead, the camera ticked by.

Ten…eleven…twelve…

“Yes.”

Hell on earth.

That’s what it’s like for Luce to be apart from her fallen angel boyfriend, Daniel.
It took them an eternity to find one another, but now he has told her he must go away. Just long enough to hunt down the Outcasts—immortals who want to kill Luce. Daniel hides Luce at Shoreline, a school on the rocky California coast with unusually gifted students: Nephilim, the offspring of fallen angels and humans.

At Shoreline, Luce learns what the Shadows are, and how she can use them as windows to her previous lives. Yet the more Luce learns, the more she suspects that Daniel hasn’t told her everything. He’s hiding something—something dangerous.
What if Daniel’s version of the past isn’t actually true? What if Luce is really meant to be with someone else?

The second novel in the addictive FALLEN series . . . where love never dies.

Book Review

Over-all Comment:

Another compelling work by the marvelous Lauren Kate!
I

Appearance:

Remember when I said that it's better when I don't see the faces of the girls on the cover? This gave me that! An answer to my prayers! Nah . . . just kidding. I knew way before I purchased Torment that the cover will be this one. And that is why I was eager to get my hands on this book. This had the best cover out of all the books in the series. And that gown, especially its top? I'm actually hoping I can see what it looks like on its front.

Characters:

I love the transformation of Luce in this book (but not everything)! She not only changed her hair color, even her approach towards life changed. She's still adjusting from the things she discovered and for being transferred in a different school, but if you knew Luce as this not-so-sociable, always-staying-on-the-good-side girl? Surprise, surprise! She's now a tough chick, and hard-headed too. She even had the guts to confront Shelby - her room mate that acts so mean towards her when they first met. Being tough and brave is cool, but sometimes she gets too hard-headed, and I don't like it. She also made some friends in her new school - Dawn, Jasmine and an adorable guy named Miles.

A guy named Miles, eh?

Miles was the first student at Shoreline that joined her for breakfast. Luce felt happy when she's with him, normal even. And that, aside from an angel and demon for humanities class, was her problem. As soon as Daniel sent her to Shoreline to 'keep her safe', she always felt like there's something that Daniel is trying to hide from her. They always had arguments about it, and she hates it. Now, whenever she sees Miles, she always try to compare him and Daniel. I personally did not like the idea that she compared the two. I mean, c'mon, Miles is adorable, sweet and all, but he's nothing like the angel who gave up his position in heaven to be with the girl he loves!

Overall, I love the character development in this book. It definitely gets better and better. The idea of setting aside Daniel and Cam's fight to save Luce is sweet and brilliant. At first, you would wonder why? Why is Luce so important for everyone? Even Molly helped in saving her. *laughs* But eventually, you will get answers in the end of the book. Another element that I liked. I love a series that have resolutions in the end of each book, and then another problem will be thrown at them on the continuation.

There you have it, my Torment review. Hope you like it. Feel free to comment your own thoughts, it would mean a lot. :)

XOXO, Risse.

Book Review - Fallen by Lauren Kate

Fallen ( Fallen #1)
by Lauren Kate

Published by: Delacorte Press on December 8, 2009
Genres:  Young Adult, Paranormal, Fantasy

My Rating: 5/5 Stars

There’s something achingly familiar about Daniel Grigori.

Mysterious and aloof, he captures Luce Price’s attention from the moment she sees him on her first day at the Sword & Cross boarding school in sultry Savannah. He’s the one bright spot in a place where cell phones are forbidden, the other students are all screw-ups, and security cameras watch every move.

Even Daniel wants nothing to do with Luce – he goes out of his way to make that very clear. But she can’t let it go. Drawn to him like a moth to a flame, Luce has to find out what Daniel is so desperate to keep secret...even if it kills her.

Dangerously exciting and darkly romantic, FALLEN is a page-turning thriller and the ultimate love story.

Book Review

Over-all Comment:

"Love this book to pieces!"

Appearance:

The title and the cover was appealing. You can see through the cover that the content is dark and fascinating. I was especially glad because the girl on the cover covered her face. It's not that I despise covers with faces in them, but it ruins the way I imagine the characters.

Characters:

The characters were described intricately, from the way hey stare at someone, to the way they move. There were characters that will surprise you, and there were also some that you will really love. And I guess, that is one great element that Lauren Kate added in the book. In order to consider that you love a specific book, you must have characters that you love and characters that you despise so much. It means that the author's way of writing is effective to her readers.

Lucinda Price, throughout the book, was this girl who thinks she's very different. Since she was a kid, she had been seeing this shadows. Little did she know that the people around her might be way more different than what she thought she was. Enter Daniel Grigori, the guy who flipped her off on her very first day at Sword & Cross and the guy whom she thinks she had known before. He acts very weird, strange and cold towards Luce but beyond these actions are feelings that he's trying so hard to keep. Cameron Briel, better known as Cam, is quite the exact opposite of him. He never hid his feelings. Especially towards Luce. (you might hate me for saying this, but I actually like his character.) He's always full of happiness and charisma when he's with Luce. That's why she was torn between two angels. Luce felt happy whenever she's with Cam, but she feels like she'd be the happiest if she was with Daniel.

There are a lot of scenes and chapters that I absolutely loved in this book. I'd like to tell you, but you might kill me for spoiling you. So might as well keep it this way:

I loved the whole love triangle between Daniel, Luce and Cam. Reading this, I actually felt like I was Luce. Torn between these two angels. It was obvious that Cam is the bad guy here, but he's so freaking adorable, you wouldn't even think he's bad. So it was pretty hard to choose. And can we just take a minute to talk about Pennyweather Van Syckle-Lockwood? She's such an amazing character! She's the best friend of Luce in this book. I hope she was forever. Whoops, did I spoil anything? HAHAHA! Sorry, can't help myself. But yeah, I loved her character so much. She cheers everything up. Thumbs up for that!

Lastly, the whole story is just amazing. Lauren Kate made a wonderful research on this probably. With the angels and all. I love love love this book! And I'm pretty sure I will love the whole series even more!

I am currently reading Torment, the second book in the Fallen Series and I'm almost done. Soo..watch out for another book review.

'Til next time!

Hands down to another book by Morgan Matson! The author of the highly-recommended titles: Amy and Roger's Epic Detour and Second Chance Summer.

To be honest ......

I have never read any of her works, which is EMBARRASSING ! It seems like I wanna hide in my closet forever! >_<

ANYWAY.

When I read the synopsis of this book I was like wai-whaa-that's just cool. I wanna have that! The story might be a little cliche. The story is actually a bit similar to 'The Amanda Project' but the attack is probably different. The title sounds a bit cheesy but it actually is about best friends. Maybe there's romance in there too but more on the friendship part is shown. I'm thinking that this is a good start for me to read Morgan Matson's works.  I've read a few reviews about it from Tiff and Regan of Peruse Project. They were as excited as I am to have this book!

The book was said to be released on May 6th by Simon and Schuster so definitely check it out!

XOXO, Risse.
